African Pygmy Kingfisher Inspired Makeup Tutorial

Ever seen an African Pygmy Kingfisher? Those guys are cute as heck so I decided to base a makeup look off of their coloring, and I’m going to tell you how!

Here are the brushes I used to accomplish this look.

Brushes in order are:

  • CVS Kabuki Brush
  • Ecotools Domed Bronzer Brush
  • E.L.F. Professional Blush Brush
  • E.L.F. Eyeshadow Brush (which I ended up not using)
  • Too Faced Bulletproof Brows Brush
  • Stila Brush 9 (Also didn’t use)
  • Ecotools Travel Brush Set

First, I did my eyes, using these products.

  • Urban Decay Electric Palette
  • Wet n’ Wild Art in the Streets Palette
  • E.L.F. Mineral Eyeshadow Primer
  • Chella Ivory Lace Highlighter
  • Smashbox Full Exposure Mascara

I started by priming my eyelids with the E.L.F. mineral primer up to the browbone, and filling in my eyelids with the Chella highlight pencil.

Using the small shading brush from the Ecotools set, I pressed the orange shadow into the inner half of my eyelid.

Using the same brush, I took Gonzo from the Electric Palette, and packed it onto the outer half of the eyelid and into the inner crease, using the blending brush from the Ecotools set, I blended until there was a gradient rather than a harsh line.

Using the same shading brush, I took Chaos from the Electric Palette, and pressed it onto the outer corner and crease, creating a “V” shape. Using the blending brush, I blended it into Gonzo to create a gradient effect once again.

For my liner, I took the smudge liner brush from the set, dipped it in water, and used Urban from the Electric Palette to line my entire eye.

Using the shading brush again, I took a little bit of Chaos and smudged it into the outer lower lash line, connecting it to the color on the outer lid. I took the orange shade from the Art in the Streets Palette and, using the same brush, smudged it into the inner lower lash line. Using the highlight brush from the Ecotools set, I swept Thrash from the Electric Palette under my brow bone. I also used my fingers to smudge some into the very inner corners of my eyes.

After my eyes, I used these products on my face and lips.

  • Revlon Colorstay Whipped Foundation in Natural Beige
  • Revlon Nearly Naked Powder in Medium
  • Urban Decay Naked Flushed Palette
  • Revlon Photoready Cream Blush in Coral Reef
  • NYX Lipliner Pencil in Plush Red
  • Maybelline Color Sensational lipstick in Coral Crush

Using my fingers, I applied a tiny bit of foundation under my eyes and blended it out to cover the fallout from the eyeshadows. I then applied foundation to the rest of my face using the kabuki brush to apply it and buff it out. After finishing my foundation, I curled my lashes and applied the Smashbox Full Exposure Mascara.

Using the eyebrow brush that came with Too Faced’s Bulletproof brows, I applied Urban from the Electric Palette to my eyebrows, filling in my natural shape.

For my contour, I used the Urban Decay Flushed Palette. I took the E.L.F. blush brush, and starting at the top of my ear applied the bronzer from the Flushed Palette in a circular motion under my cheekbones. I also very lightly applied bronzer around my hairline on my temples, and around my jawline. I also applied the highlighter from the Flushed Palette and on the bridge of my nose, the top of my chin, and in a triangular shape underneath my eyes.
